Why we celebrate holiday on Sunday? Why week off is on Sunday Only? Story behind the Sunday as a Holiday or Week Off

Sunday: The Prefect day of the Week. We enjoy the day after the full tired 6 days of the Week. People always wait for Sunday so that they can enjoy the day at home with their families or visit some places with friends, partying on Saturday Evenings so that they can lie down all day on Sunday without any tension to go to office etc. But, have you ever thought:

Why we celebrate Sunday as a Holidays and no other day like Monday to Saturday?

There are numerous theories & numerous stories are available in every side of the globe regarding the Holidays on Sundays but today we will discuss about only 3 most famous and logical theories.

1. Sunday is treated as holy day for Christians because it’s believed that Jesus Christ left the world on Good Friday and again came back to earth alive on Sunday. The Catholics decided to spare/dedicate one day in the name of Jesus Christ (God). They do prayers, read holy bible and dedicate Sunday to Jesus Christ (God) from their busy schedule after Monday to Saturday. This is the actual story of Sunday as a Holiday as per the English Tradition

2. In the Hindu tradition People worship Lord Sun on daily basis just after the Bath in the morning by pouring Water through “Kalash” to the rays of Sun. Every Planet has its separate days dedicated to Week Days like:

a) Monday for Moon,
b) Tuesday for Mars,
c) Wednesday for Mercury,
d) Thursday as Jupiter,
e) Friday as Venus and
f) Saturday for Saturn.
g) Uranus & Neptune considered as Shadow Planets.

Now just Sun is remaining for which people dedicated the Sunday “Sun” or “Raviwaar (in Hindi)” for Lord Sun (As per the Hindu Tradition). That’s why people were started celebrating in the name of Lord Sun and declared this day ad Holiday.

3. It was the time when Britishers were ruling India from 1600. Britishers took day off on Sundays for themselves to worship Jesus Christ (reason as mentioned in point 1 above).

That time (around 1800’s) Indian Peoples used to work in the Mills where they need to work 365 days in a year without holidays. Because of heavy work task and no rest, people getting tired and the efficiency of work has been also reduced. Then a Leader named “Narayan Meghanji Lokhande” understood this thing and protested against British Rulers for the Week off so that the workers can rest and this will also increase the efficiency of work. Workers can enjoy a day with families and do whatever they want to do in their personal life.

“Narayan Meghanji Lokhande” chose the day “Sunday” for the worship because Meghanji said that “Sunday is treated as a holy day for Goddess KHANDOBA whom they treat sacred”

On first note, British Rulers refused to do so but the Workers still protested with his leader for many days and finally Britishers need to agree for the Week off for Labors on Sunday. From that time people of India started celebrating Sundays as Week off to worship its Goddess/Lords

Most of the countries celebrate Week offs on Sundays but there are also some countries where Week Holidays are celebrating on other week days instead of Sunday’s like: Nepal celebrate week off on Saturday because as per the Hindi Tradition, they think that Saturday is not a good day to work or start a new thing so they celebrate Saturday by staying Home or for Enjoyment. They start their Week from Sunday by worshipping Lord Sun etc.

Apart from the Sunday Holidays, the Saturday Holidays are getting famous these days throughout the world. Most of the Multinational Companies are following this rule on strict manner and providing Holidays on Saturdays for its Employees.
