Father's Day's origins can be traced back to a single, inspiring woman: Sonora Smart Dodd. Here's a quick breakdown of the history:

  • Inspiration Strikes: In 1909, Sonora Dodd, from Spokane, Washington, attended a Mother's Day sermon. Inspired by the concept of honoring mothers, she wanted to create an equivalent day to celebrate fathers. Her own father, a Civil War veteran, had raised her and her siblings single-handedly after their mother's death.
  • First Father's Day: Dodd proposed the idea to local organizations in Spokane. With their support, the first official Father's Day celebration took place on June 19, 1910, in Spokane. It was held on the third Sunday of June, which happened to be Dodd's father's birthday month.
  • A Long Road to National Recognition: While the celebration gained traction locally, it took decades for Father's Day to become a national holiday. President Woodrow Wilson acknowledged the day in 1916, but it wasn't until 1972 that President Richard Nixon signed legislation making it an official national holiday in the United States.

Today, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in many countries around the world, honoring fathers and father figures for their contributions to families and society.
